AIDS is a new and deadly infectious disease of the modern era. Many human diseases still have no available treatment or cure, and new diseases continue to emerge. Discovering a drug for any disease requires a lot of time, money, and hard work. There are examples of scientists who have spent their entire lives searching for a single drug, but their discovery benefits countless patients. American scientist Gertrude Belle Elion worked very hard to discover medicines for many diseases. In 1988, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Gertrude Elion was born on January 23, 1918, in New York. After graduating from Hunter College in New York, she began her career as a teacher in 1941. She studied biology deeply and discovered the first drug for leukemia. In addition, she also found new medicines for gout, malaria, herpes, and meningitis. She was the first woman to be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in the United States. She passed away on February 21, 1999.
