The Inventor of the Air Conditioner: Willis Carrier

The true value of an air conditioner is realized only during the heat of summer. Today, they are widely used in homes, offices, theaters, and large shopping malls. The inventor of this machine was an engineer named Willis Carrier. Known as the "father of cooling systems," Willis had a very interesting life.

Willis Carrier was born on November 26, 1875, in a small village called Angola near New York. His father was a farmer, and his mother repaired machines like sewing machines and clocks. Willis inherited his technical knowledge from his mother. After graduating from Cornell University in 1902, he joined a company in Buffalo that made heaters and fans as an engineer.

Through experiments, he discovered a way to control the heat and cold in the air. In 1902, he succeeded in cooling the air and reducing humidity by creating a machine using sprayers. After this, he built the first air conditioner. It was very large and used ammonia gas, which was toxic.

In 1911, he discovered a new method called the Rational Psychrometric Formula, which is still used in air conditioners today. In 1915, Willis established a factory in America to manufacture these machines. Over time, he developed methods to make smaller air conditioners, and his fame grew. He installed the first units in the Madison Square Garden, the U.S. Capitol, and the White House. During World War II, Willis also served in the American military.
