The Empty Pot .

L ong ago in ancient India, there lived a wise emperor who had no children of his own. As the years passed, he knew he needed to choose a worthy successor to inherit his throne. Instead of selecting from among his powerful ministers or wealthy relatives, he decided to test the honesty of the kingdom's children, believing that true integrity was the foundation of a great ruler.

One bright morning, the emperor invited all the children of the kingdom to the grand palace courtyard. Looking out over the eager crowd with a gentle smile, he announced, "I am going to give each of you a single seed. Take it home, plant it, care for it, and bring back whatever you have grown exactly one year from today. The child who shows true honesty and dedication will be named the next ruler of this empire."

Among the excited children was a young boy named Shashwat. Thrilled by the opportunity, he rushed home, carefully prepared a beautiful ceramic pot, and planted his seed deep in the rich soil. Every single day, he watered it with care and made sure it was placed in the perfect amount of warm sunlight.

Weeks passed, but to his dismay, nothing grew. Shashwat didn't give up; he tried fresh, nutrient-rich soil, adjusted his watering schedule, and even prayed for a tiny green shoot to break through the surface. Yet, despite all his efforts, the pot remained stubbornly empty.

Months went by, and as the seasons changed, Shashwat saw other children in his village proudly carrying thriving pots filled with vibrant, colorful flowers and tall, leafy plants. He felt deeply embarrassed whenever they passed by, but he resolutely refused to replace his failed seed with a new one. "The emperor gave me this specific seed," he reminded himself. "I must stay true to his challenge, even if nothing grows."

Finally, the year came to an end. The children returned to the palace, lining the courtyard with magnificent pots bursting with brilliant blooms. Shashwat stood among them, holding his completely empty pot, his head bowed in shame as the others whispered and laughed around him.

The emperor walked slowly through the crowd, inspecting all the lush, flourishing plants, his expression strangely unreadable. Finally, he stopped directly in front of Shashwat. Looking down at the bare soil, the emperor asked, "Why is your pot empty, young man?"

Shashwat swallowed his fear and explained honestly, "Your Majesty, I tried my absolute best. I watered it daily, changed the soil, and cared for it faithfully, but nothing would grow. I did not want to bring an empty pot, but I could not bring myself to deceive you."

To everyone's absolute shock, the emperor's stern face suddenly lit up with pure joy. He raised his hand, gesturing to the guards, and announced to the entire courtyard, "Behold your next emperor! This boy will inherit the throne!"

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Murmurs of confusion broke out until the emperor raised his voice to explain. "The seeds I gave all of you one year ago had been boiled. They were completely dead and could never have grown into anything. When you saw nothing happening, many of you panicked and replaced my seed with a different one. Shashwat was the only child honest enough, and courageous enough, to bring back the empty pot. True leadership requires absolute honesty and the courage to face the truth."

Shashwat's heart filled with profound pride. He realized he had lost nothing at all; in fact, his commitment to the truth had gained him the greatest honor in the land. From that day forward, he was remembered not just as a great ruler, but as an enduring symbol of honesty and integrity throughout the kingdom.

Moral: Honesty and courage are far more valuable than success gained through deception.
