The Ancient Civilization of Lothal

Sometimes natural disasters like earthquakes or floods bury cities deep underground. After many years, archaeologists dig them up and find remains like houses, walls, utensils, roads, toys, coins, and weapons. These are called ancient artifacts.

Such ancient remains were found in Lothal, near the Gulf of Khambhat in Gujarat. Lothal is located about 80 kilometers from Ahmedabad, in the Dholka region.

The city of Lothal had amazing planning. Its roads were wide and straight, crossing each other neatly. It had wells, bathhouses, and a proper drainage system. A large dockyard (port) was also found here, suggesting it was a busy trading port long ago.

Other items like stone beads, clay toys, and metal utensils were also discovered. These show that Lothal’s civilization was well-developed, and people likely lived comfortable and happy lives.
