Special Facts About Birds of Prey

Birds of prey hunt smaller birds and animals and eat only meat. They are among the biggest and highest-flying birds.

These birds never build nests in another hunter bird’s territory. They loudly fly around their area to mark their boundaries and keep others away. Bigger birds need more food, so they need a larger area. For example, a golden eagle’s territory is around 25 square kilometers.

Smaller birds like hawks and owls may live together in groups within their area.

Birds of prey usually have rough feathers in dark colors like black or grey — not bright or colorful ones.

Their chicks are weak and helpless until they grow up and learn to fly.

These birds have sharp eyesight. From high up in the sky, they can spot small rats on the ground or even fish swimming in the water. Their vision is so clear that bending of light doesn’t affect them.
