The South African cricket team is also known by the nickname "Proteas." This "Protea" refers to South Africa's national flower, the Protea. Belonging to the same family as sunflowers, Proteas come in many varieties. This flower is about one foot in diameter and blooms throughout the year. It grows on shrubs that are 4 to 5 feet tall. Proteas ranging in color from white to pink can be found, and they are world-famous for their size and beauty.
It is named after the Greek god Proteus. It is believed that this flower originated on Earth about 70 to 80 million years ago. It is cultivated in nearly 20 countries and enhances the beauty of bouquets. It can stay fresh in a flower vase for up to six days.
