- Pintu was thrilled! He was only 13 years old and this was his first chance to manage his own money

Vidhi Chheda

O ne day, Seema called her son Pintu and said, "I'll be giving you pocket money at the beginning of every month."

Pintu's eyes lit up with excitement. "Really? How much will I get?" he asked eagerly.

Seema smiled. "You'll get Rs.100 each month. But you must spend it wisely and record every expense. There's one condition-you need to save Rs.20 out of it. If you do, I'll give you a bonus of Rs.10 next month."

Pintu agreed immediately. He was thrilled! After all, he was only 13 years old and this was his first chance to manage his own money.

On the first day of the month, Seema gave Pintu a Rs.100 note along with a small diary.

Pintu looked puzzled. "Why the diary, Mom?"

Seema laughed. "Oh Pintu, you forgot already? I told you-you need to record all your spending in it."

"Oh yes, yes! I remember now!" he said, tucking the diary into his school bag.

The days passed.

At the end of the month, Seema called Pintu and asked to see his diary. He brought it proudly and opened it. The pages looked like this:

01-May    Saved Rs.20

                       Money left: Rs.80

05-May   Notebook - Rs.20

                       Balance: Rs.60

11-May    Map - Rs.5

                       Balance: Rs.55

13-May    Chocolate - Rs.10

                       Balance: Rs.45

21-May    Cycle puncture repair -

                        Rs.40

                        Balance: Rs.5

Seema read the diary carefully and smiled with pride. "Pintu, you managed to save Rs.25 instead of Rs.20. Well done!"

She gave him the promised Rs.10 bonus and told him, "Keep saving Rs.20 every month, and I'll keep giving you this reward."

Pintu nodded joyfully. He had not only learned to handle money, but also the value of saving.
