ઠગની સેવા .

- એક વાર્તા... બે ભાષામાં!

- 'મને એકલાને બીક લાગે છે. તમે આવો તો આપણું બંનેનું કામ થાય. તમારા જેવા શૂરવીર સાથે હોય તો કશી બીક નહીં.'

એ ક હતું શિયાળ. તેણે ગધેડાને જોયો. ગધેડો ચરતો હતો. શિયાળે વિચાર કર્યો કે આ ગધેડાની જાત મૂરખ હોય છે તેને સમજાવું. એ જો વનમાં આવે તો તેનો શિકાર થઈ જાય.

શિયાળ ગધેડા પાસે ગયું.

મીઠી બોલી કહીને બોલ્યું: ગધામામા ! તમે તો ભારે બહાદુર.

ગધેડો ફૂલાયો.

શિયાળ કહે : તમે મારી એક વાત માનો તો ભારે મઝા થાય. તમારા જેવા બહાદુર જ એવું કામ કરી શકે.

ગધેડો વધારે ફૂલાયો.

ગધેડો કહે : કહે ને ! શું કામ છે ?

શિયાળ કહે : થોડે દૂર મઝાનું ઘાસ છે. લીલી શેરડી જેવું નાગરવેલના વેલા જેવું મીઠું મીઠું મધ.

આ વાત સાંભળીને ગધેડાના મોઢામાં પાણી આવ્યું.

શિયાળ કહે : ત્યાં એક તળાવ છે. તેને કાંઠે ઘાસનો પાર નથી. તમે ત્યાં આવો તો આપણને લહેર પડે. તમે ઘાસ ચરજો. તળાવમાં માછલાં ઘણાં છે. હું માછલાં પકડીશ. મને એકલાને બીક લાગે છે. તમે આવો તો આપણું બંનેનું કામ થાય. તમારા જેવા શૂરવીર સાથે હોય તો કશી બીક નહિ.

પોતાના કોઈ વખાણ કરે એટલે આપણે ફૂલાઈએ છીએ.

કોઈ આપણા લાભની વાત કહે ત્યારે આપણે લાલચમાં લપટાઈએ છીએ.

ગધેડો વિચાર કરવા પણ ન રોકાયો. કહે કેચ, ચાલને ભાઈ ! તો તો મઝા પડે.

ગધેડાને લઈને શિયાળ ચાલ્યું.

ચાલતાં ચાલતાં થોડી વાર થઈ.

ગધેડો કહે : હવે કેટલે દૂર છે ?

શિયાળ કહે : આ રહ્યું. બહુ દૂર નથી.

તેઓ માંડયા ચાલવા. બમણો મારગ કપાઈ ગયો.

ગધેડે ફરી પૂછયું.

શિયાળ કહે : બસ, આવી જ ગયા.

એમ થોડે દૂર જાય અને ગધેડો પૂછે. શિયાળ એમ જ કહે કે, આ રહ્યું ! બસ આવી જ પહોંચ્યા.

ગધેડાને હવે વહેમ ગયો.

શંકા થઈ.

લુચ્ચા માણસો ઉપર ભરોસો ન કરવો જોઈએ એમ ચતુર માણસો કહે છે. લુચ્ચા માણસો કંઈ લાભની વાત કહે તો શંકા કરી જોવી કે શા માટે લાભ આપે  છે? શિયાળને મારી એવી શી ગરજ ? આમ વિચારતાં જ ગધેડાને લાગ્યું કે, શિયાળે ઠગાઈ કરી હશે.

ગધેડો ઉભો રહી ગયો.

શિયાળ કહે : બસ, હવે થોડે દૂર આવો સામે જ એ તળાવ છે.

આમ કહીને શિયાળે માંડયું એક ગીત ગાવા:

ઉવાંઉ...હો...

વાંઉ, વાંઉ...હો...

ત્યાં તો સામે શિયાળનું ટોળું દેખાયું.

ગધેડો કહે : પેલાં બધાં કોણ છે ?

શિયાળ કહે : એ મારા નાતભાઈઓ છે. તેઓ તમારૃં સ્વાગત કરવા ઊભાં છે.

ગધેડો કહે : જરા નજીક તો આવો. મારે એક ખાનગી વાત કહેવી છે.

શિયાળ નજીક ગયું.

ગધેડાએ ધડ્ દઈને મારી લાત મારી. શિયાળ ઉછળી પડયું દૂર અને પોતે માંડયો ભાગવા.

ભાગતો ભાગતો ગધેડો ગામના પાદરમાં ગયો. પીપળાની ડાળે કાગડો બેઠો હતો.

કાગડો કહે : આમ ભાગતા કાં આવો, મામા?

ગધેડો કહે : પેલો લુચ્ચો શિયાળ...

બધી વાત કાગડાને કહી.

કાગડો કહે : મફતમાં લાભ આપે બે જણ. એક સજ્જન માણસ અને બીજો ઠગ માણસ. સજ્જન માણસનો હેતુ ભલાઈ કરવાનો હોય છે... પણ ભલાઈ કરીને ઠગ ઠગી જાય છે. માટે ચેતીને ચાલવું.

ગધેડો કહે : હવે તો ઠગાઉં જ નહિ.

The Thief's Trick

O nce there was a fox. He saw a donkey. The donkey was grazing. The fox thought that donkeys are stupid, so he decided to trick him in the forest and catch him.

The fox went to the donkey.

He spoke sweetly and said, "Dear donkey! You are very brave."

The donkey puffed up with pride.

The fox said, "If you listen to me, it will be very fun. Only someone brave like you can do this."

The donkey became even more proud.

The donkey said, "Tell me! What do you want?"

The fox said, "A little far from here, there is delicious grass. It is green, sweet like sugarcane or a vine of Nagervel (chlorophytum).”

Hearing this, the donkey's mouth watered.

The fox said, "There is a pond there, but no grass grows near its edge. If you come there, we will be happy - you can graze grass and I will catch fish in the pond. I feel lonely catching fish alone. If you come, we both will get what we want. With a brave partner like you, there is nothing to fear."

When someone praises us, we feel proud.

When someone speaks of benefit, we get greedy.

The donkey did not stop to think. He said, "Come on, brother! This will be fun."

The fox led the donkey.

After walking some time, the donkey asked, "How far is it now?"

The fox said, "Not far now."

They kept walking.

The donkey asked again.

The fox said, "We have arrived."

They walked a little more and the donkey asked again. The fox said again, "Here we are! We have almost arrived."

Now the donkey became suspicious.

He thought, "Smart people say we should not trust bad men. Why would someone give benefit for free? What does the fox truly want from me ? "

Thinking this way, the donkey realized the fox was tricking him.

The donkey stopped.

The fox said, "Come, just a little further, the pond is right ahead."

While saying this, the fox started to sing a song:

"Uvau... Ho...

Vaau, Vaau... Ho..."

Suddenly, a group of foxes appeared on the other side.

The donkey asked, "Who are those?"

The fox said, "Those are my relatives. They are here to welcome you."

The donkey said, "Come closer. I want to tell you something..."

The fox came close.

The donkey suddenly kicked the fox hard. The fox jumped away and the donkey ran off.

Running fast, the donkey reached the village. There was a peepal tree. A crow was sitting there.

The crow said, "Where are you running like this, dear?"

The donkey said, "That clever fox tried to cheat me."

He told everything to the crow.

The crow said, "Only two types of people give free benefits - good people and thieves. Good people do good for others, but thieves cheat even after good deeds. So be careful."

The donkey said, "Now I will never be tricked again."
