Vaccines protect us from many diseases, including those caused by viruses. While many researchers have developed vaccines, Maurice Hilleman is a leader among them. He developed over 40 vaccines, including those for eight deadly diseases like Smallpox, Hepatitis B, and Meningitis.
• Early Life: Maurice was born on August 30, 1919, in Miles City, Montana, USA. His mother passed away shortly after his birth, and he was raised by his uncle on a poultry farm. This gave him an early opportunity to study chickens.
• Education: While reading at a church library, he discovered Darwin’s theory of evolution, which deeply influenced him. A brilliant student, he received several scholarships, graduated from Montana University, and earned a doctorate in Microbiology from the University of Chicago.
• Career & Success: From 1948 to 1958, he served as a doctor in the Army. During World War II, he developed an Influenza vaccine that saved many soldiers' lives, earning him fame and a high military medal.
• Legacy: In 1957, he joined a pharmaceutical company as a researcher. Known for his hard work and military-style discipline, he served as a consultant for the World Health Organization after retiring. He passed away on April 11, 2005.
