Luke Howard - The Man Who Named the Clouds

- વિશ્વના વિજ્ઞાનીઓ

We’ve all seen the sky filled with clouds during the rainy season. But did you know there are many types of clouds at different heights? Their shapes, types, and positions help weather scientists make forecasts.

A scientist named Luke Howard gave names to different types of clouds at various heights in 1802, making weather prediction easier and more accurate.

Luke Howard was born on November 18, 1772, in London. His father made candles. After studying at a school in Burford, Howard continued his education in Plymouth and became a pharmacist. In 1793, he opened his own pharmacy, and his medicine company was known as Allen & Howard.

While running his pharmacy, Howard had a passion for studying the weather. From 1801 to 1841, he carefully recorded London’s weather and did many studies. He was also interested in plants. Because of his contributions, he is often called the “father of meteorology.”

Howard wrote several books about cloud movement and types. He classified clouds into three main types based on their height: Cumulus, Stratus and Cirrus. Each cloud type helps in forecasting rain. His cloud classification has been very helpful for scientists. Luke Howard passed away on March 21, 1864.
