Many methods have been invented to diagnose human diseases, but the modern MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) method is the most efficient. An MRI machine provides detailed images of the internal parts of the body. This imaging technique is useful for complete checkups as well as diagnosing fatal diseases like cancer.
• The Inventor: A scientist named Raymond Damadian.
• Birth: He was born on March 16, 1936, in New York, USA.
• Education: After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin, he earned his M.D. degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
• The Principle: Since living bodies contain potassium and sodium, they react to magnetic fields. Based on experiments using this principle, he mapped out a method to capture internal images of the body using magnetic fields. He created a machine after announcing that this method could identify cancerous tumors.
• Success: In 1977, he successfully diagnosed cancer using his MRI machine. He founded the Fonar company to manufacture these machines. He received many honors in America for this invention, including the National Medal of Technology, the Bower Award, and the Bioscience Innovation Award. In 2003, his name became a subject of controversy regarding the Nobel Prize in Medicine.
