Inventor of the Gasoline Engine: Karl Benz

Engines in vehicles run on various fuels like petrol, diesel, biogas, and CNG. In the past, carriages were pulled by horses; later, steam engines were developed, and today our vehicles run on a wide range of fuels. Many scientists have contributed to the field of transportation.

The gasoline-powered engine was invented by a scientist named Karl Friedrich Benz, and his life is quite interesting. Benz was born on November 25, 1844, in Germany. His father passed away when Karl was only two years old. Despite living in extreme poverty, his mother ensured he received a good education. After finishing school, he joined a polytechnic university to study railway engines and later attended a mechanical engineering college.

He used to cycle to college every day. Seeing horse-drawn carriages on his way often made him wonder about building a carriage that could move without horses. After his studies, he worked as a designer in a scale-making company and even did bicycle repair work. Once he saved some money, he started a factory with friends.

In 1885, he built the first Benz Motorwagen by fitting a gasoline engine between the rear wheels. In 1886, his car was named "Automobile fueled by gas." It had wooden wheels. At that time, petrol was sold in grocery stores and used mainly for cleaning or lighting lamps. By 1899, Benz's company was producing practical cars, and he initially released 572 cars into the market. He passed away on April 4, 1928.
