મૂર્ખને માથે શિંગડા .

- એક વાર્તા... બે ભાષામાં!

- કેટલાક દાનવોને માથે ઊંચાં ગૂમડાં થઈ આવ્યાં.દાનવોને માથે શિંગડાની કલ્પના કરવામાં આવે છે. વાસ્તવમાં શિંગડાં નથી પણ સાપના ડંખ છે. વાસુકિના ઝેરી ડંખને લઈને ત્યાં ગૂમડાં થાય છે

આ ડા સાથે આડી વાત. દાનવો પહેલેથી જ આડા હતા. દેવો પાસે જે કોઈ વસ્તુ હોય તે મેળવીને જ રહેતા. એ વસ્તુ તેમના ઉપયોગની છે કે તેનો ખ્યાલ તેઓ કરતા નહીં. એવામાં સમુદ્રમંથનનો પ્રસંગ આવ્યો. મંદરાચલ પર્વતની રવઈ બનાવી, વાસુકિ નાગના દોરડા વડે સમુદ્રનું મંથન કરવાનું નક્કી થયું. મંથનમાંથી શું મળશે એની તો દાનવો ખબર ન હતી, પણ પોતાનો ભાગ લેવા તેઓ આવી પહોંચ્યા. દેવો કહે: 'પહેલાં મંથન કરવું પડશે. એ તો ભારે પરિશ્રમનું કામ છે.'

દાનવો કહે: 'ઠીક છે, દોરડું વાસુકિ નાગનું છે. યાદ રાખજો.'

દાનવો કહે: 'નાગની પરવા તમને નથી તો પછી અમને શું કામ હોય ?'

દેવોએ આ ક્ષણે ઝટ લાભ લીધો. તેઓ કહે: 'પણ સાપના મોઢા પાસે અમે રહીશું. અમે દેવ છીએ. મોઢાનો ભાગ અમારો.'

દાનવો વિફર્યા. તેઓ કહે: 'જાઓ, દેવવાળા ! સાપના મોઢાનો ભાગ તો અમે જ મેળવીશું. એ દિશામાં અમે અને અમે જ રહીશું.'

દેવો કહે: 'અલ્યાઓ, સાપને તકલીફ થશે તો કરડી પડશે. વાસુકિને તો અનેક મોઢાં છે.'

દાનવો કહે: 'ડરાવો નહીં. વાસુકિને અનેક મોઢાં છે તો અમે અનેક દાનવો છીએ.'

દેવો કહે: 'જેવી તમારી મરજી.'

મંથન શરૂ થયું. વાસુકિના મોઢાનો ભાગ દાનવોએ પકડયો. પૂંછડાની પકડ દેવોના હાથમાં આવી. મંથન શરૂ થયું. પણ મંથનમાં સાપ જોરજોરથી ખેંચાતો. વેદના થતી. તે જોરથી ડંખ મારી દેતો આમ અનેક મોઢાથી વાસુકિએ અનેક દાનવોને ડંખ માર્યા.

કેટલાક દાનવો તો મરી જ ગયા. કેટલાકને માથે ઊંચાં ગૂમડાં થઈ આવ્યાં. દાનવોને માથે શિંગડાની કલ્પના કરવામાં આવે છે. વાસ્તવમાં શિંગડાં નથી પણ સાપના ડંખ છે. વાસુકિના ઝેરી ડંખને લઈને ત્યાં ગૂમડાં થાય છે.

પાછળથી લોકોએ એવી કલ્પના કરી કે દાનવોને માથે શિંગડાં હશે ! પણ ત્યારથી 'મૂર્ખને માથે શિંગડાં'ની કહેવત પડી ગઈ.

દેવોની વાદે ચાલવામાં દાનવોને ડંખ મળ્યા. ઝેર મળ્યાં. ગૂમડાં મળ્યાં. શિંગડાં મળ્યાં અને વેદના...! વાત જવા દો. મૂર્ખ તથા આડા માણસોને બીજું મળે પણ શું ?  

 Horns on a Fool's Head

A crooked talk with crooked people. Demons (asuras) were crooked from the very beginning. Whatever the gods (devas) possessed, the demons wanted to snatch it, whether it was useful to them or not.

So came the great event of the churning of the ocean. Mount Mandarachal was chosen as the churning rod, and the serpent Vasuki was to be used as the rope. The churning would begin.

Now, the demons had no idea what would come out of the churning, but they rushed to join anyway-just so they wouldn't be left out.

The gods said:

"First, the churning itself must be done. It is hard, tiring work."

The demons replied:

"Fine, but remember-the rope is Vasuki the serpent."

The gods answered:

"If you don't care about the serpent, why should we?"

At that very moment, the gods saw an opportunity. They said:

"But then, we shall take our place near the serpent's mouth. We are gods, so the mouth belongs to us."

The demons grew furious:

"Go away, you gods! The serpent's head will be ours. Only we will stand on that side!"

The gods warned:

"Fools! If the serpent suffers, he will bite. Vasuki has many mouths."

The demons sneered:

"Don't try to scare us. If Vasuki has many mouths, then we are many demons!"

The gods calmly said:

"As you wish."

So, the great churning began. The demons held Vasuki by his mouth. The gods held his tail. The pulling and tugging started.

But with every hard pull, Vasuki cried out in pain. In his suffering, he lashed out and bit hard-again and again. With his many mouths, Vasuki bit many demons.

Some demons died on the spot. Some developed huge lumps on their heads.

This is how the image of demons having horns was imagined. In reality, they had no horns. Those big bumps were simply the result of Vasuki's venomous bites. The poisonous stings created swellings on their heads.

Later, people began to imagine that demons must have horns. And from this story came the saying:

"A fool has horns on his head."

By listening to the gods, the demons ended up with nothing but bites, venom, lumps, horns, and endless pain!

And truly, what else do fools and crooked men ever gain?
