Coco: A Colorful Journey Through Music, Memories, & Magic!

- Travel with Miguel to the magical Land of the Dead, where music, family, and fun come alive in the most unexpected way! Coco is more than just a movie - it's a heartwarming celebration of love, dreams, and remembering those we care about.
C oco is a 2017 animated musical film from Disney-Pixar that takes you on a dazzling adventure filled with music, magic, and marigolds! It tells the story of Miguel Rivera, a 12-year-old boy from a big, shoe-making family in Mexico. But here's the twist - Miguel loves music, while his family hates it! Why? Because many years ago, Miguel's great-great-grandfather left the family to pursue a music career and never returned. Since then, music was completely banned from their lives.
But Miguel dreams of becoming a great musician, just like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz - a famous singer and movie star. On Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a special holiday in Mexico when people remember their ancestors, Miguel finds himself magically transported to the Land of the Dead - a fantastical world where skeletons walk, dance, and party all day long! In this incredible world, Miguel meets his long-lost relatives and a charming trickster named Héctor. Together, they set out on a thrilling journey to uncover the truth about Miguel's family history and bring music back into his life.
But hurry - Miguel must return before sunrise, or he could stay in the Land of the Dead forever!
At its heart, Coco is about following your passion, respecting your family, and never forgetting the people who came before you. And yes, it might make you cry a little... but mostly happy tears!
How this movie was made - Behind-the-scenes magic!
The magic of Coco took six years to bring to life! That's right - six whole years of designing, researching, animating, and storytelling. Directed by Lee Unkrich (who also co-directed Toy Story 3) and co-directed by Adrian Molina, the Pixar team wanted to make sure the film showed Mexican culture and traditions with love and accuracy.
The team even made multiple trips to Mexico to experience Día de los Muertos first-hand! They visited villages, cemeteries, and colorful altars (called ofrendas), talked to families, and learned about the food, music, and stories passed down through generations.
Director Lee Unkrich said: "We wanted to make something that felt real, emotional, and respectful. We learned so much from the people who opened their homes and hearts to us."
Adrian Molina added: "The more we learned, the more we fell in love with the idea of celebrating family in this way.
It's something everyone in the world can connect with."
Pixar also had a special team called "Cultural Advisors" - people from the Latino community who helped make sure everything from the characters' clothes to the food looked and felt authentic.
The music? Oh wow - it's unforgettable! The toe-tapping song "Remember Me", written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (the couple behind Frozen's "Let It Go"), is both catchy and emotional. It's the soul of the movie.

Interesting titbits about Coco
"Coco" was the first Pixar film with an all-Latino voice cast, including Anthony Gonzalez as Miguel, Gael García Bernal as Héctor, and Benjamin Bratt as Ernesto de la Cruz.
The marigold bridge is not just pretty - in Mexican culture, marigold petals are believed to guide spirits back to the living world on Día de los Muertos. That glowing bridge is full of meaning.
Miguel's dog Dante is a Xoloitzcuintli (try saying that five times fast!), a real Mexican breed considered sacred and believed to guide spirits in the afterlife.
The Land of the Dead in the film was inspired by real Mexican cities like Guanajuato, famous for its colorful stacked houses. The animators created more than 7 million lights to make the glowing cityscape sparkle!
There's a quick blink-and-miss-it Toy Story reference in the Land of the Dead - look closely and you might see a skeleton version of Woody!
The film won Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song ("Remember Me") in 2018
