Carlo Urbani: The Discoverer of SARS

Among modern diseases like Bird Flu, MERS, and H1N1, SARS is considered one of the most dangerous. Although no new cases have been reported since 2004, the disease once spread rapidly across China and Southeast Asia.

Carlo Urbani was the scientist who discovered the virus behind this respiratory illness. Beyond SARS, he conducted deep research into many infectious diseases, providing invaluable service to the medical world. Ironically, he passed away from the very disease he helped identify.

• Early Life: Born on October 19, 1956, in Italy. His father was a navy school teacher and his mother was a primary school teacher.

• Career: After earning his medical degree in 1981, he became a specialist in infectious diseases. He worked with the WHO (World Health Organization) to investigate outbreaks in the Maldives and Guyana.

• Achievements: He was a member of MSF (Doctors Without Borders) when the organization won the Nobel Peace Prize.

• Legacy: In 2003, while treating a patient in Hanoi, he contracted SARS. He died on March 29, 2003, at the age of 46.
