Bhungas: The Heart of Kutch's Folk Life

Bhungas are houses built in a distinct style in the villages of Kutch. Bhungas are circular and earthquake-resistant, allowing them to stand firm even during an earthquake.

The walls of a Bhunga are made of mud and plaster, and its conical roof is constructed from grass, tree branches, and leaves. The grass and leaves are woven in such a way that rainwater does not enter, but air is filtered and cooled as it passes through. Due to the mud and grass, the Bhunga feels warm in winter and cool in summer.

Bhungas may look simple from the outside, but they are internally artistic, attractive, and extremely clean. The decorations on the inner walls, such as mudwork, shelves for keeping utensils, water stands (paniyaros), and niches (gokhlas), are captivating. But the most attention-grabbing feature is their colorful roof.
