Recognising the gravity of the situation, the ministry of education (MoE) on Oct 3 issued draft guidelines for schools titled UMMEED - Understand, Motivate, Manage, Empathise, Empower, Develop.With ‘Every Child Matters’ as the underlying belief in developing the guidelines, the draft details directions to schools for enhancing sensitivity and understanding and providing support in cases of reported self-harm.The guidelines have come at a time when the an increasing number of students committed suicide at the coaching hub Kota in 2023 while preparing for engineering and medical entrance exams.School wellness teamAs per the draft, to make effective efforts towards preventing suicide in schools, “A dedicated school wellness team (SWT) will be formed under the leadership of the school principal, where each member of the team will be oriented towards handling crisis situations.”Another initiative mentioned in the draft is ‘promoting a positive school environment’, which can reduce the risk of isolation, despair,discrimination and the occurrence of suicide.Focus on mental-healthActions for promoting a positive school environment include yoga, meditation, and other stress-reducing activities; encouraging peer support; providing channels for expression; integrating mental well-being into school functioning; and more.In 2015–2016, any psychological disorders were reported to affect 13.7% of the population aged 18 years and older in India.At the same time, high suicide mortality among adults in India has become a public health concern. About 90% of the organisations reviewed, provide a privacy notice to data principals when collecting data through their websites.&nbsp;Since such a notice is the first step adopted by any organisation entering the digital world, the high level of compliance does not indicate the presence of a robust data privacy framework, the findings showed.On Third-party transfersOn the aspect of third-party transfers, 43% of organisations were found lacking in providing a well-defined purpose for which personal data was shared with third-party data processors.“For organisations in India, it is not only an opportunity to streamline their data collection and processing processes but to also build customer confidence and overall stakeholder trust, apart from enhancing their global competitiveness,” said a risk consulting partner and APAC cybersecurity and privacy leader at the consultancy firm.“Shifting the focus from ‘privacy as an Act requirement’ to ‘privacy by design’ can help India,” he added.What more the analysis saysAround 48% of organisations surveyed provide the option to withdraw consent. However, the process of withdrawing consent is not as easy as providing it.Consent is obtained in multiple regional languages only by 2% of organisations, said the report.About 16% of organisational websites display a cookie consent banner to users highlighting that their personal data will be collected and processed by the organisation.Nearly 33% of organisations display a cookie notice informing users that the website (or any third-party service used by the website) they are navigating using cookies.About 41% of organisations display the right of data principals (erasures, access and correction) on their website along with the mechanisms to exercise them.“While most organisations in the information technology, hospitality, consumer and pharma sectors and super apps have processes in place to honour data subject rights, they do not provide dedicated email addresses or online forms for support,” the report noted.Around 74% of organisations have listed contact details of a person or a team that can be contacted for queries around data processing.About 54% of these organisations have proactively provided the contact details of their Data Protection Officer (DPO).Entities shall fine-tune their systems: GovernmentThe report came as the government said last month that some entities may be given a year’s time to fine-tune their systems to comply with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.It will apply to the processing of digital personal data within India where such data is collected online, or collected offline and is digitised. The Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) found during sample testing that substandard ghee was supplied which was falsely represented as being Amul ghee.&nbsp;The annual Bhadarvi Poonam festival was held from Sept 23 - 29 during which lakhs of devotees paid a visit to the Ambaji temple in Sabarkantha.&nbsp;Himatnagar-based Sabar Dairy filed an FIR against Mohini Caterers, a firm that has been given the contract to make mohanthal prasad.Amul also registered a complaint against Mohini Caterers at Ambaji police station for falsely using the company’s name.Temple administrator Siddhi Verma said, “The tender of Mohini Caterers has not been renewed by Ambaji temple, which was concluded on Sept 30.”However, no agency has been assigned to make prasad yet, and a meeting will be held to appoint the new caterer.<img src="https://static.gujaratsamachar.com/content_image/content_image_8699a35e-db54-4aa1-ab2d-66fe9da64901.jpeg" data-filename="prasad.jpg" style="width: 100%;"> Adulteration in prasad“2,820 kg of substandard ghee worth ₹8 lakh was seized from Mohini Caterers on Aug 28,” said HG Koshia, FDCA commissioner. He also did not take any steps to stop the flogging, which was an illegal and humiliating act. Since his presence is not disputed, it is clear that he played an active role in the said incident and had consented to the flogging.”“Watching all the videos, it could be made out that the videos were captured by some of the people standing in the public, which was being controlled and held back by the police personnel in uniforms,” read the report.The accused police officersThe four police officers facing contempt charges are AV Parmar, DB Kumavat, Kanaksingh Laxmen Singh, and Raju Rameshbhai Dabhi.They are accused of breaching the Supreme Court’s guidelines on arrest as outlined in the DK Basu case.The high court court has granted these officers time until Oct 11 to file an affidavit in their defence.
