Governments must look after basic needs of people: Vajpayee

Lucknow, Dec. 24: Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said here on Wednesday that the recent Assembly elections have shown that governments which ignored people’s basic needs like roads and electricity were wiped out.

In his address after laying the foundation stone of the Tala Hydro electric project, he said three state governments had got a "jhatka" (shock) in the Assembly elections as they ignored people’s aspirations and did not provide them with electricity.

These three governments had also ignored roads, which were full of potholes making the lives of the travelers miserable, Vajpayee said adding that people now want basic infrastructure for which they look towards the government and the private sector.

Vajpayee said that people were looking forward towards joint collaboration between government and private sector to provide them basic infrastructure including roads, power and water.

The Tala hydroelectric project in collaboration with Power Grid and Tata Power is the largest in the country and the first of its kind in Asia. It is the first private investment in the transmission sector. (PTI)
